Mole and Cyst Removal
Mole and cyst removal are in-office procedures used to remove benign skin lesions for cosmetic reasons, physical irritation, or comfort. Common reasons for removal include rubbing on clothing, bleeding, recurrent inflammation, or visibility in prominent areas.
While many moles and cysts are harmless, it is important that any changing, irregular, painful, or concerning lesions are properly evaluated before removal.
Mole and cyst removal involves carefully removing benign skin lesions while preserving healthy surrounding tissue and minimizing scarring. The technique used depends on the type of lesion, its size, depth, and location.
Moles are typically removed by excision or shave techniques, while cysts require complete removal of the cyst and its capsule to reduce the chance of recurrence. Both procedures are usually performed in the office using local anesthesia and are well tolerated.
Our physicians focus on precise technique to achieve the best cosmetic outcome possible, especially for lesions on the face, neck, or other visible areas.
Before removal, we strongly recommend evaluation by a dermatologist for any mole that is new, changing, irregular, bleeding, or painful.
Dermatologists are best equipped to assess moles for signs of skin cancer. If there is any concern for malignancy
biopsy or treatment by a dermatologist is essential.
Once a lesion has been evaluated and determined to be benign, removal by a board-certified plastic surgeon may be appropriate – particularly when cosmetic outcome and scar placement are important.
Mole and cyst removal may be appropriate for:
- Benign moles
- Epidermoid (sebaceous) cysts
- Inclusion cysts
- Pilar (scalp) cysts
- Irritated or recurrent cysts
Your surgeon will help determine which areas are appropriate for treatment.
During your consultation, one of our board-certified plastic surgeons will evaluate the lesion and review any prior dermatology assessments or biopsy results.
Our physicians will discuss whether the lesion is appropriate for in-office removal, explain the technique, review scar placement, and outline the healing timeline. If dermatologic evaluation is needed first, we will guide you on next steps.
You may be a good candidate if you:
- Have a benign mole or cyst
- Have had dermatologic evaluation when appropriate
- Are bothered by the appearance or irritation
- Want removal with attention to cosmetic outcome
- Are in good overall health
Mole and cyst removal are appropriate for both women and men.
Recovery is usually simple. Mild redness, swelling, or tenderness may occur for a few days.
Stitches, if placed, are typically removed within one to two weeks. Patients are advised to follow scar care
instructions and protect the area from sun exposure during healing.
Most patients return to normal activities immediately.
The cost depends on the size, location, number of lesions, and complexity of removal.
Cosmetic removal is typically not covered by insurance. Medically necessary cyst removal may be covered in some cases. Pricing and insurance considerations will be discussed during your consultation.
